Where: Royal Preston Hospital, Ward 2C, Glasshouse Conservatory

What: Opening of new, state-of-the-art Neurosurgery Theatres

Detail: The two theatres feature the most up-to-date and advanced brain navigation equipment funded by a generous contribution from the Sydney Driscoll Neuroscience Foundation. The evening included the presentation from the Sydney Driscoll Neuroscience Foundation to Stuart Heys, Chairman, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for the brain navigation equipment and an opportunity to see the equipment being used during a live operation. Tea and coffee were served.

The event started, for the invited attendee's, with a tour of the Audio/visual Suite and viewing of a live operation, followed by a presentation from Andrew Ferguson Chairman, and Nihal Gurusinghe Trustee, The Sydney Driscoll Neuroscience Foundation, to Stuart Heys Chairman, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

2008 Dr David Paling, SpR in Neurology A prospective study on the outcome of tilt table testing and carotid sinus massage in 290 consecutive elderly adults with syncope or unexplained falls, and of treatment of 135 of these patients with proven neurocardiogenic syncope with midodrine.Now studying for a Ph.D in the department of Neuroinflammation at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery at Queen Square, London. The award money is helping towards the Ph.D fees. The title of his thesis is "Development of novel MRI techniques to investigate brain perfusion, oxygen utilization, and metabolism in patients with multiple sclerosis". The project is for three years.

£1,500 prize money was given to each entrant as the Trustees decided that both submitted excellent manuscripts.
